The NGS Core Facility (NGS-CF) of the CIBIO Department, University of Trento, is part of the Integrated Biology Research Infrastructure (IRBIO), recognized as a strategic infrastructure under the PNIR by the Autonomous Province of Trento. Located within LaBSSAH, it delivers advanced NGS technologies for genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics and epigenomics. The centralized platform includes Illumina NovaSeq 6000, MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore MinION, and supports library preparation, automation and quality control through Nanodrop, Qubit, Fragment Analyzer, LabChip GX Touch and qPCR for sequencing-ready quantification. The facility is run by a highly experienced and collaborative team of Staff Scientists who combine strong scientific expertise with technical excellence, ensuring rigorous quality standards, tailored experimental design, accurate budgeting and dedicated support for both research and diagnostic projects. Selected workflows are accredited under ISO 15189:2025
RESEARCH
The NGS-CF advances novel Next Generation Sequencing methodologies and develops innovative approaches for both basic and diagnostic applications. In recent years, activities have focused on enhancing the sensitivity and accuracy of CRISPR-Cas9 screening detection through optimized library design and analytical pipelines. The facility has also implemented state-of-the-art single-cell technologies within the newly established Single Cell Facility, enabling high-resolution profiling of cellular heterogeneity. Additional efforts include the development of advanced strategies for isoform characterization and alternative splicing analysis using long- and short-read sequencing. Research further addresses the identification of genetic determinants driving disease and the study of microbial communities to support improved diagnostic and preventive strategies against infectious diseases.
